Reading
Our phonics programme ensures progression of word reading from the outset and is intended to be a ‘blueprint’ for everyone who supports children in their reading development. Pupils understand that they use their phonics knowledge as the first tool when tackling new words in reading but also understand that automatic recognition of whole words is the ultimate goal. Following regular assessments, additional targeted support is provided for certain pupils so they are able to ‘keep up’ Children are listened to read at least once a week with an adult. We also encourage children to be listened to read every day at home too.
We have created a 'Recommended Reading' checklist, which lists 50 books that we think will appeal to children aged 4-5 years old. Our reading suggestions include a diverse range of titles to cover all ability ranges with titles suited to first independent reading, paired reading, and reading together with your child. We aim to provide a wide variety of book choices that develop a reading-for-pleasure ethos.

Practical ways to support your child’s learning
Read together regularly – Encourage a love for books by reading to and with your child every day.
Engage in creative play – Provide materials for drawing, building, or imaginative play to support creativity and problem-solving.
Practice counting and numbers – Introduce simple counting, sorting, and number recognition through everyday activities. Here are some examples:-
- Count toys, fruit, steps, or anything around the house to reinforce number recognition.
- Use songs and rhymes that involve numbers to make counting fun and memorable.
- Play games that involve numbers, like matching games or number-based board games.
- Help your child sort objects by colour, size, or type, and count how many are in each group.
- Ask questions like, “How many plates do we need?” or “How many apples do we have?
Support independence – Encourage your child to do tasks on their own, like dressing themselves, cleaning up, or tidying toys.
Encourage outdoor play – Provide opportunities for your child to explore nature, develop physical skills, and have fun outside.

In EYFS, homework is primarily focused on daily reading to support early literacy skills. Additionally, project-based and topic-related homework will be sent out throughout the year to enhance learning and exploration in various areas.

Enrichment
We have enrichment lessons on Friday afternoons, providing a variety of exciting activities. These include ‘Let's Get Physical,’ where children engage in fun physical activities, cooking lessons, sewing, learning Greek, and ‘Music Makers,’ where they explore music through creative play. These lessons help broaden their skills and interests in a fun and engaging way.
In the summer term, EYFS children participate in Bikeability lessons, where they learn to ride a bike. These lessons help develop core strength, coordination, and confidence, providing an enjoyable way to build important physical skills.
